Hertfordshire kitchen prices have stabilised after two volatile years. Materials have come down 4–7% since their 2023 peak, but skilled-labour day-rates are up 6%. The net effect: a typical Rickmansworth or Watford kitchen renovation costs roughly what it did in 2022 — but the mix is different. Here’s a line-by-line breakdown of what real money buys in 2025.
Budget tier: £8,000 – £10,000
At this level we’re re-using the existing layout, supplying mid-range MFC carcasses with painted MDF doors, laminate worktops or a basic 20mm quartz, mid-range appliances (Bosch Series 4, Hotpoint), and re-using the floor. Typical breakdown: cabinetry £3,400, worktops £900, appliances £1,700, labour £1,800, sundries £700, plus £500 contingency. This is a substantial improvement on a tired kitchen — not a transformation.
Mid tier: £10,000 – £13,000
This is our most-built band. Hand-painted in-frame shaker doors on FF&E-grade carcasses, 20mm engineered quartz worktops with mitred upstand, Bosch Series 6 or Neff N50 appliances, new flooring (LVT or engineered oak), proper lighting design with dimmable zones. Typical breakdown: cabinetry £4,800, worktops £1,600, appliances £2,400, flooring £900, lighting £600, labour £2,000, sundries £400, plus £700 contingency.
Premium tier: £13,000 – £15,000
Layout changes (relocating a sink or hob), structural works (knocking through to a dining room with an RSJ), solid-timber doors or sprayed lacquer, Caesarstone or Silestone with thick edge details, Siemens iQ500/700 or Neff N70 appliances, integrated bin and recycling runs, brass or bronze hardware, hand-glazed splashback. Typical breakdown: cabinetry £6,200, worktops £2,000, appliances £3,200, structural/electrical £1,200, flooring £1,100, lighting £700, labour £2,400, sundries £500, plus a £1,000 contingency.
What pushes you above £15k
Bi-fold doors to the garden, an island with seating for four, a wine fridge plus a separate American-style fridge, induction hob plus separate combi steam oven, bespoke handmade door fronts (deVOL, Plain English, Naked), Carrara marble worktops, or a structural opening that needs a steel and Building Control sign-off. Any one of those will add £2–4k. Several will take you to £20k+.
Where Hertfordshire homeowners overspend
Three places. First, appliances — a Miele/Gaggenau spec on a £10k kitchen swallows the entire materials budget. Second, ‘provisional sums’ from cheaper builders that always grow once work starts. Third, mid-project layout changes — every wall moved in week two adds £600–£1,200. Fix the layout in design, before tools are on site.
Where Hertfordshire homeowners underspend
Lighting, hardware and a properly designed splashback. These three items are roughly 5% of the budget but deliver 30% of the visual impact. Don’t cut them to save £400.
VAT, contingency, and the honest stuff
All prices above include 20% VAT — anyone quoting ex-VAT is hoping you’ll forget about it. We build a 5–8% contingency into every quote. If it’s not used, it’s not charged. If a builder offers a quote with no contingency at all, that’s a quote that will overrun.
